Description: Large white patch on back of head, head looks large and puffy. Dark, glossy forehead and nape. White breast and sides, black back. Female, black head with white oval behind eye. Brown body with pale breast.

Habitat: Migrants can be found on lakes and deeper marshes.

Where in Nebraska: Common to uncommon migrant across the state. Occasionally birds will summer in Nebraska. No evidence of breeding.

Fun Facts: Buffleheads are the smallest diving duck and nests in tree cavities and almost always use those made by Northern Flickers or sometimes Pileated Woodpeckers.
